My daughter passed the 11+, but once she started Year 7 at our local grammar school, she began to struggle significantly with Maths and her confidence dropped. We were fortunate to find Shivali, who has been an exceptional tutor.
Shivali has a wonderful ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly and patiently, breaking down difficult topics into manageable steps that my daughter could easily understand. Her teaching style helped rebuild my daughter's confidence and develop a much stronger understanding of the subject.
Thanks to her support, hard work, and encouragement, my daughter has made remarkable progress and has now moved into the top Maths set. We are absolutely delighted with her progress.
I would highly recommend Shivali to any parent looking for a supportive Maths tutor. She has made a real difference to my daughter's academic success and confidence.
About Shivali Johri
Helping GCSE & A Level students close knowledge gaps, build confidence and achieve the grades they once thought were out of reach.
Many students don't struggle with Maths because they lack ability. They struggle because small gaps build over time, confidence drops, and eventually every new topic feels harder than the last. My role is to identify those gaps early, rebuild strong foundations and give students the confidence and strategies they need to succeed.
Before qualifying as a UK Maths teacher (QTS), I trained as a Chartered Accountant in India and began my teaching journey with undergraduate students at a leading business school. With over 10 years of teaching experience across different educational settings, I bring together strong subject knowledge, exam expertise and a structured approach to help students understand Maths and achieve their potential.
From an Accountant to a Maths Teacher
My path to teaching was not conventional and that is precisely what makes my approach different. I saw firsthand how mathematical thinking shapes real financial decisions, and I believed the most powerful place to change that was in the classroom.
Years in Accountancy
Before teaching, I worked as an accountant. I saw how adults who never developed mathematical reasoning struggled with tax returns, mortgage decisions, and investment choices that shaped their entire lives. Percentages, algebra, and probability were not abstract they were the difference between financial confidence and confusion.
Qualified Teacher Status
I left accounting because I believed the classroom was where real change happens. I gained QTS, bringing rigorous classroom teaching expertise alongside my real-world perspective. I understand the National Curriculum, exam board requirements, and what examiners actually look for.
Shivali Maths Hub
Today I run Shivali Maths Hub based in Tunbridge Wells- offering GCSE and A Level small group tuition, 1:1 sessions, and flagship in person GCSE masterclasses at Camden Centre, Tunbridge Wells. Students are grouped by year, ability, target grade and exam board for genuinely targeted support.
The Shivali Maths Hub Approach
Every programme is tailored to your child's exam board (Edexcel, AQA, OCR or IGCSE), current ability and target grade, and is delivered through carefully matched small-group sessions, 1:1 tuition, or specialist GCSE Masterclasses. "I don't fit students into groups. I build groups around students" Before joining a small group, every student completes a short assessment. I personally create each group based on ability, current attainment, target grade and learning needs. I also keep year groups separate, so students learn alongside peers following a similar stage of the curriculum and working towards comparable goals. This creates a focused learning environment where every lesson is pitched at the right level. Students are challenged appropriately, encouraged to participate with confidence and supported to make consistent progress. Rather than simply memorising methods, students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, learn to approach exam questions strategically, avoid common mistakes and understand how to maximise marks in their examinations.
Every student has a different starting point. Some need to rebuild foundations and overcome Maths anxiety. Others are aiming for the highest grades and want to maximise their potential. My goal is simple: to give every student the understanding, strategies and skills they need to succeed in Maths. Give your child the confidence, skills and strategies to succeed in Maths.
- Diagnostic-first approach- identify gaps & maths anxiety
- Exam board specific- Edexcel, AQA, OCR & IGCSE
- Matched small groups - by year, ability, target grade & learning needs
- Recorded sessions available for A level students (with parental consent)
What Makes Lessons at Shivali Maths Hub Different
Drawing on classroom teaching, accountancy experience, and a dedicated focus on GCSE and A-Level mastery.
Maths Anxiety Aware
Up to 30% of UK teenagers experience maths anxiety. I recognise the physical and emotional signs as I've vast experience working with SEN students. I create a calm environment where students can think clearly again, without pressure.
Systematic Gap Closing
Hidden gaps from earlier years often block progress at GCSE and A Level. I diagnose these systematically and rebuild foundations before layering on exam technique so progress is real, not temporary.
Exam Technique That Scores
Knowing the maths is only half the battle. I teach students how to read questions noticing the command words, structure working, manage time, and tackle high-mark problems, how to use the calculator effectively, the skills that turn knowledge into grades. Students attending my full programme understand what an examiner is looking for, they think like an examiner.
Real-World Mathematical Reasoning
My accounting background means I connect abstract topics to genuine adult decisions tax, interest rates, risk, and financial planning. Students see why maths matters, not just how to pass an exam.
Why "When Will I Ever Use This?" Deserves a Real Answer
The National Curriculum covers the content. What it often cannot provide is the bridge between classroom topics and adult life. That is where specialist support and my dual background as accountant and teacher makes the difference.
- Percentages- income tax, credit card rates, inflation and savings
- Algebra - break-even analysis, budgeting, and planning goals
- Probability - risk assessment, insurance, and informed decisions
- Compound interest- pensions, debt, and long-term financial thinking

What Families Say
Shivali, thank you for improving my Maths grade since day 1. You have undoubtedly fuelled my Maths knowledge with formula sheets, jokes, exclusive past papers and above all-a dedication to carefully explaining your passion of maths to others. Week by week, you have continually inspired me with your innate devotion to maths, and that is something I wish to carry with me throughout my whole life. Whilst you are not my only Maths tutor, you are by far my favourite. I feel honoured to be taught by you.Y11, Student Tonbridge Grammar School · Year 11
To my lifesaver, Shivali, As the GCSE season finally came to an end, I had been thinking about the people who got me to the finish line, now here I am wanting to give you a massive thank you for being such a huge part of my journey. There are teachers who show you the answers and then there are those who truly show you what you are capable of, thank you for being the second. For each maths exam I took, Ithought of how much work and effort you put in for me, creating lessons for every Tuesday until it was all over. When we first started your lessons, maths felt impossible, I had loved being the top of my class from yr 3 until yr 6 but I felt like maths had slipped away from me, and that's when you came in, you sat with me, taught and showed me the joy of maths - you taught me the tips and tricks of maths and helped me find a passion. So, Shivali, thank you for all that you did for me since Yr 9, I will continue to stay in touch because I'll be needing you for the rest of my journey. Thank you for all your support, from your favourite tutee!Y11, Student Tonbridge Grammar School · Year 11
